I would have died for this dress in middle school during my short-lived femme goth phase. Yes, it’s true… I once lusted after the bell-sleeved acetate velvet dresses at Hot Topic.
….Ok, I still would die for this dress now.

I’ve been duking it out with 1970’s fashion for too long.  When I began my love affair with 20th century vintage, it was 1950’s all the way, no exceptions.  But as my knowledge base has grown, I’ve come to love the 40’s and 30’s as well.  Platforms, bias cuts, fitted suits… yes please!  (Who knew?)
The 1970’s, however, I couldn’t jive with.  Too new, I suppose, and too many people who wore 1970’s clothing in the 70’s had simply never stopped doing so.  My love for vintage comes from rediscovery and reinvention — which is why I’m not into 1980’s or 1990’s fashion at all.  Far too current.
All that being said I have to admit that I’ve been enjoying the recent resurgence of 70’s fashion and the inspiration it offers current designers.  Case in point: this amazing red sequin outfit photographed on Eniko Mihalik for Vogue Nippon August 2010.  Gorgeous, disco-tastic and surprisingly feminine even given its simplicity.  The above outfit (and the rest of the looks in the shoot) are proof that inspiration from 1970’s styles can be brought into current fashion in a timeless way, without looking irreparably dated.
